Ain’t No Party Like a Fool’s Gold Party

The CMJ Marathon in New York hosts a week’s worth of panels, concerts, free swag and umpteen amounts of music from emerging artists just on the cusp of superstardom. We caught a cool panel at NYU with Q-Tip, The Cool Kids, Asher Roth, Amanda Diva, and journalists/editors Jon Caramanica, Nekesa Moody, Lola Ogunnaike, and VIBE Editor-in-Chief Danyel Smith. The panel was titled The Hip-Hop Renaissance: A Cultural Rebirth? which was apropos considering the title of Q-Tip’s soon to be released album The Renaissance. Basically the discussion question the rebirth of Hip-Hop in its present form – is it a testament to the old school, an evolution, or a bastardization? General consensus ruled in favor of evolution, especially when cats like the Cool Kids and Asher Roth are sitting here. Good talk, but Tip didn’t seem to fully enjoy the poins of view from the journalistic side of the panel. Then when they opened up the floor for questions, it was definitely time to go (everybody swears they’re an expert).

Ok now for our favorite party of the week:

Indie powerhouse Fool’s Gold held their one-year anniversary this evening at Webster Hall. Everyone including A-Trak, Dave 1 of Chromeo, Trackademicks, Nick Catchdubs, and many more came to celebrate the year-long reign of the label. Good music, good crowd, lots and lots of hyperactivity. Of course the highlight of the evening was Fool’s Gold’s femme fatale Kid Sister’s performance. Can we say how excited we are for the little mama’s debut album Dream Date? We heard it and let’s just say it’s going to make you smile at Hip-Hop and feel good again. The lady KS performed a few select tracks from the album. Clad in a Spelman College tee, sparkly leggings, a Malcom X fitted, and “Dwayne Wayne” flip-shades, Kid Sis jumped, juked, and grinded while giving us treats like “Damn Girl”, “Control”, “Family Reunion”, “Life On TV”, and her hit single “Pro Nails”. She ended the set with “Switchboard” featuring Chi-town’s own DJ Gant-Man. Talk about sore feet and no voice at the end of that performance. We didn’t get sold fool’s gold tonight…24 carat baby.
